Paper and Products

Why should I buy New Leaf Paper?
New Leaf Papers are acid-free, have the highest recycled content and post-consumer waste content in each grade. In addition, New Leaf Papers are also either processed chlorine free or elemental chlorine free. For details, about why chlorine has negative environmental health effects,
click here. The Eco-Audit, New Leaf Paper's environmental benefits statements, describes the natural resources saved by using our papers versus virgin paper.

Does New Leaf Paper have tree-free paper (such as hemp or kenaf)?
Where can I get it?

Most of New Leaf Paper's uncoated grades are 100% post-consumer waste, which could be considered tree-free. Because of the amount of post-consumer fiber that goes unused each year, New Leaf Paper is concentrating its efforts on improving the efficiency of the recycling process and increasing the use of post-consumer waste at our mill partners.
For alternative fiber papers, try Living Tree or Vision Paper.

How can I verify the PCW in New Leaf Paper?
We work very closely with our manufacturing partners to ensure that all of our papers meet the highest environmental standards. We have certification letters on file from all of our manufacturing partners, verifying the recycled content and post-consumer recycled fiber in our papers.

Does New Leaf Paper carry brown paper/cardboard/colored paper/notecards/etc.?
New Leaf Paper mainly sells fine papers used for printing and publishing. Other recycled products are available through office supply stores and distributors. If your company does have a need for large quantities (40,000 pounds) of paper board, please contact one of our
sales representatives in your area.

Recycled Paper

What is the difference between post-consumer waste and pre-consumer waste?
Post-consumer waste are items that have reached their end use and then have been placed in recycling bin and sent to a waste collection facility. At the collection facility, the items are sorted by type and sent to reclamation sites. For paper, post-consumer fiber is sent to a pulp mill to be made into post-consumer pulp. The pulp is then used in the paper making process.
Pre-consumer waste is waste that has not reached its end use. It can best be described with an example. A large (or parent size) sheet of paper is used when making paper envelopes. However, the pattern for the envelope is cut out of the parent size sheet and used as an envelope. The remaining portion of the sheet is then sent back to a pulp mill to be pulped and then used as pre-consumer recycled fiber.

For a complete description of recycled paper terminology, please click
here.

What are the requirements for using the recycled logo?
By federal standards, the recycled logo requires at least 30% pre-consumer content. All New Leaf Papers exceed that requirement.

How does New Leaf Paper acquire the post-consumer waste used in its papers?
Post-consumer waste comes from collection facilities where it is sorted by type and then sent on to reclamation sites. Paper is sent to pulp mill where post-consumer waste is de-inked (either by chemical or physical means) and then processed into pulp. The pulp is then either used on site or sent to another mill to undergo the paper making process.
