Why Recycled Paper Is A Smart Investment

At first glance, recycled paper may not always appear to be the lowest-cost option, especially when you’re comparing price per hundredweight (CWT). But smart procurement isn’t just about the lowest number on a spreadsheet. It’s about the total cost of acquisition—a more complete view that accounts for everything from yield and availability to service, environmental value, and overall supply chain performance.

Here’s the reality: The most expensive paper is the paper you can’t get. A low upfront price means very little when mills tighten up and supply becomes limited. That’s why at New Leaf Paper, we prioritize availability and continuity. Through our mill partners and warehouses, we ensure that customers have reliable access, even during market disruptions.

Beyond access, recycled papers can bring yield and design advantages. By using groundwood products, —or hybrid groundwood/freesheet— grades instead of freesheet when appropriate, customers can reduce fiber use and cost without compromising quality.

The New Leaf Paper portfolio also allows for creative product design, which can lead to savings in weight and logistics. Educator’s Offset is a great groundwood option, while New Leaf Book is a hybrid that reduces fiber use. Our Harmony Offset 47# product saves 6% vs a traditional 50# item, and our 57# saves 5% vs a traditional 60# item, all while providing a comparable bulk.

Then, there’s the service component. Our customers value the responsiveness and partnership New Leaf Paper offers, because time spent chasing paper, reconfiguring runs, or reordering late shipments adds cost quickly. In addition, inventory servicing programs are available, ensuring availability of key products.

Creative cost savings can be achieved by moving to groundwood recycled or hybrid (freesheets /groundwood) recycled products giving you higher fiber yield with lower fiber costs. Choosing a lighter basis weight sheet (like a 40# vs a 45#) can save 10-11% in cost, by using less tonnage while still yielding the same number of pages. A lighter basis weight also saves in transport costs vs. a heavier basis weight product. Additional savings cam be found by selecting a product that has a basis weight yield gain based on nominal specifications, like Harmony Offset (47# vs 50# or 57# vs 60#), which has a 5-6% yield gain.

Finally, let’s not forget the value of environmental impact. Choosing products with high post-consumer recycled content can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve water and energy, and support your company’s sustainability commitments. These benefits are increasingly being factored into proposal requests,  customer purchasing decisions, and long-term brand value.

When you take a step back and look at the full picture—performance, access, service, design flexibility, price, and environmental benefits—New Leaf’s recycled paper often proves to be the stronger, more resilient investment.

At New Leaf Paper we’re committed to the economic value and environmental savings that sustainable paper options offer. We are happy to provide tools like our Eco-Audit Calculator along with additional information and resources to help our customers truly capture their environmental savings. This helps our business partners understand their progress towards their sustainability goals, and assists with effective communication of achievements to their stakeholders.
